Copper Brooch found in Trench 3

Here’s the copper alloy brooch found by new student Louisa yesterday (03/07/2013) in Trench 3.

The decorative indentation around the edge of the brooch is visible, as well as what appears to be a mount for a stone or gem. The mounts for a pin remain intact on the back of the brooch.

  1. The layer is an early medieval context, likely, no later than our mid 9th century AD horizon, dated by a series of small finds and some 300 styca coins. There are very few finds from this particular level so far, so dating is far from certain.
