Stone with Probable Sculpture in Trench 3

Earlier this week we uncovered a fragment of stone in Trench 3 that seems to have been carved. After some discussion, and after a site visit from Professor Rosemary Cramp, it’s been decided that the stone fragment is most likely carved:

Probable sculpted stone from Trench3.

Over the next week, we plan to excavate this stone and find out more about its design. We also hope to estimate a date for the carving. This is a particularly exciting find for us; it’s not everyday you come across new examples of Anglo-Saxon stone sculpture!
