In Trench 1 this week, we’ve partly removed the hearth feature identified earlier in the season, which lies in the eastern half of the trench. The hearth was divided up into quadrants and two of these quadrants were removed. We’ve sampled these so that we can learn more about how the hearth was used.

We also excavated a post hole. There appear to be twin posts within in it and it is possible that there are other post holes in the same alignment as each other; these may form part of a structure which could align with St. Oswald’s Gate. Further excavation over the next few days will hopefully give us greater insight on this theory:
